Profile
Urban design is (essentially) placemaking – as a joint task. For Mathias Sander, this means that the city is the skill and, above all, the responsibility of everyone involved. Cities and municipalities, owners, operators and users have a duty to get the best out of every place.
With this approach, Mathias Sander has been advising and supporting cities and companies as a freelance consultant since 2022. Prior to that, he was Director Leasing Strategy at dan pearlman and Director Center Marketing and Head of Mall Marketing at the ECE Group.
His specialty: Mathias Sander uses analytical precision and apt humour to show where and how cities and companies can reposition themselves in the face of structural change. The expert identifies trends and future potential – and translates these into strategies and measures. Mathias Sander shares his knowledge and inspiration as a speaker, moderator and expert in keynote speeches, specialist articles and interviews.

My drive
The design of public spaces and the local mix of offerings shape identity. They are the foundations of a city or municipality’s quality of life. Helping to improve them means making places more liveable – preferably permanently. If that’s not an incentive!
My strengths
I have good analytical skills and understand places very quickly. My experience has also shown me that implementation without a strategy is pure actionism. A strategy that does not check the feasibility of its recommendations for action and measures is an art without bread and butter.
“Every location has strengths and potential – and needs a tailor-made concept for the future. Individuality beats pigeonholing.”
